The History of Chiropractic The generally accepted official "birth" of chiropractic dates to 1895 and is credited to Daniel David Palmer. There are however references dating back to the age of Hippocrates of chiropractic and its healing abilities. On September 18, 1895, Daniel Palmer was working in his office in the evening and noticed a janitor, Harvey Lillard, working near by. When a loud fire-engine passed by outside and the janitor did not react, and Daniel Palmer realized that the man was deaf. With further communication efforts, Palmer learned from Lillard that he has previously had perfect hearing, and that he became deaf one day after stooping over while working and feeling a distinct "pop" in his back. Afterward he realized that he could no longer hear. Palmer was convinced that the popping in the back and Lillard's loss of hearing were connected. He asked and received permission to examine Lillard's back and found that one of the vertebrae was not in its normal position in relation to the other vertebrae. He carefully adjusted the vertebrae back into position with pressure from his hands and Lillard's hearing was restored. After continued success with other patients, Daniel Palmer coined the term chiropractic, which he derived from the Greek words "chiro" which means hand, and "practic" which means practice or operation. |
